
{"id":5619,"date":"2021-12-15T09:15:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-15T14:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/?p=5619"},"modified":"2025-05-20T16:36:59","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T20:36:59","slug":"ng-duke-endowment-grant-rprx","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/ng-duke-endowment-grant-rprx\/","title":{"rendered":"Ng and colleagues awarded grant to explore cost savings from produce prescription programs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:80%\">\n<p>The Duke Endowment has awarded a $765,000 grant to Dr. Shu Wen Ng and colleagues Dr. Thomas Keyserling (UNC School of Medicine), Dr. Ashley Price (Duke University Department of Family Medicine and Community Health), and Neal Curran and Sam Hoeffler (Reinvestment Partners) to expand their research on the benefits of the food prescription programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Administered by the Durham-based nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/reinvestmentpartners.org\/\"><strong>Reinvestment Partners<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in communities across North Carolina, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatwellrx.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RPRx food prescription program<\/a><\/strong> provides $40 per month \u2014 distributed electronically through Food Lion\u2019s customer loyalty program \u2014 for participants to buy fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previous research has already found that this model is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8358732\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>effective<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;at increasing fruit and vegetable purchases, and higher use of the program&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/S1368980021001828\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>is associated<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;with fewer hospitalizations. With the new grant, Ng and colleagues will further investigate whether the RPRx program is associated with improved health outcomes and lower health care costs for communities. Duke,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dukeendowment.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Duke Endowment<\/a>&nbsp;is a private foundation that strengthens communities in North Carolina and South Carolina by nurturing children, promoting health, educating minds and enriching spirits. Since its founding, it has distributed more than $4&nbsp;billion in grants.
