Arantxa Colchero, Guillermo Paraje, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/team\/barry-m-popkin-ph-d\/\"><strong>Barry Popkin<\/strong><\/a> explore the possible impacts of a Chilean tax levied on products that currently carry warning labels and other regulation under the Law of Food Labeling and Advertising. The country has had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/where-we-work\/chile\/\"><strong>sugary drink tax in place since 2014<\/strong><\/a>, but it uses different sugar thresholds than the warning label law to determine which products will be regulated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"background-color:#dbebf7\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2014 Beverage Tax Law<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sugar content thresholds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For all non-alcoholic drinks with with&nbsp;coloring, flavoring,&nbsp;or caloric sweeteners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>18% ad valorem tax<\/strong>&nbsp;on drinks with&nbsp;<strong>&gt;6.25 g sugar\/100 mL<\/strong>&nbsp;(+5% from previous 13% rate)<\/li><li><strong>10% ad valorem tax<\/strong>&nbsp;on drinks with&nbsp;<strong>\u22646.25 g sugar\/100 mL<\/strong>&nbsp;(\u20133% from previous 13% rate)<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2016 Law of Food Labeling and Advertising<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nutrient profiling model<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\"><table><tbody><tr><td><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Foods<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Liquids<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Energy<\/strong> (calories per 100 g or mL)<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">275<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">70<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Sodium<\/strong> (mg per 100 g or mL)<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">400<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">100<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Total sugars<\/strong> (g per 100 g or mL)<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">10<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">5<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Saturated fat<\/strong> (g per 100 g or mL)<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">4<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">3<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the study, Colchero, Paraje, and Popkin simulated a tax on foods and drinks using the more comprehensive nutrient profiling model and found that taxing products with warning labels \u2014&nbsp;i.e., ultra-processed junk foods and sugary drinks \u2014 would likely lead to significant drops in purchases of these products.
