
{"id":4102,"date":"2021-09-10T16:13:08","date_gmt":"2021-09-10T20:13:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/?p=4102"},"modified":"2024-12-19T11:25:21","modified_gmt":"2024-12-19T16:25:21","slug":"study-shows-chilean-policy-package-led-to-declines-in-purchased-calories-sugar-fat-and-sodium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/study-shows-chilean-policy-package-led-to-declines-in-purchased-calories-sugar-fat-and-sodium\/","title":{"rendered":"Study shows Chilean policy package led to declines in purchased calories, sugar, fat, and sodium"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:70%\">\n<p>The latest evaluation of Chile\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/policy\/law-of-nutritional-composition-of-food-and-advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Law of Food Labeling and Advertising<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;finds that under&nbsp;Phase 1&nbsp;of the law\u2019s implementation,&nbsp;Chileans purchased significantly fewer calories, sugar, saturated fat, and sodium than would have been expected had the law and its regulations not gone into effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196(21)00172-8\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>study<\/strong><\/a>, published in the August issue of&nbsp;<em>The Lancet Planetary Health<\/em>,&nbsp;combined data on household food shopping from 2015\u20132017 (during Phase 1 of the law) with nutrition facts data for all the products purchased to examine changes in what groceries Chileans bought before\/after the law took effect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, purchased calories, sugar, saturated fat, and sodium declined significantly. Among \u201chigh-in\u201d purchases (junk foods and sugary drinks that did not meet Phase 1 nutrition criteria), households bought 24% less calories, 27% less sugar, 16% less saturated fat, and 37% less sodium compared to what they were expected to buy, had the law not come into effect<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"835\" height=\"184\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Chile_Phase1_Findings_graphic.png\" alt=\"Chile Phase 1 Findings Graphic\" class=\"wp-image-4327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Chile_Phase1_Findings_graphic.png 835w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Chile_Phase1_Findings_graphic-350x77.png 350w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Chile_Phase1_Findings_graphic-768x169.png 768w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Chile_Phase1_Findings_graphic-42x9.png 42w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Chile_Phase1_Findings_graphic-272x60.png 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 835px) 100vw, 835px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This evaluation builds on and confirms findings from the Global Food Research Program&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1003015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>previous evaluation<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;of changes in beverage purchases during Phase 1. In that study, authors observed a 24% drop in the volume of sugary drinks purchased and a 28% decline in calories purchased from sugary drinks, compared to expected purchases had the law not taken effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These results highlight the potential for multi-component policies to significantly impact people\u2019s shopping and consumption habits.
