
{"id":3333,"date":"2021-06-29T16:36:50","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T20:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/?page_id=3333"},"modified":"2021-10-15T08:38:23","modified_gmt":"2021-10-15T12:38:23","slug":"berkeley-ssb-tax-evaluation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/berkeley-ssb-tax-evaluation\/","title":{"rendered":"Berkeley SSB tax evaluation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>One year later: Berkeley\u2019s Soda Tax significantly reduced sales of sugary drinks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our 2017 study titled, \u201c<strong>Changes in prices, sales, consumer spending, and beverage consumption one year after a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages in Berkeley, California, US: A before-and-after study<\/strong>,\u201d compared prices, sales, store revenue, and beverage intake among Berkeley residents before and after implementation of a sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax on March 1, 2015. We found that the tax led to a drop in purchases of taxed SSBs (-9.6%) and an increase in sales of untaxed beverages (+3.5%), especially water (+15.6%).&nbsp;Store revenue did not fall more in Berkeley compared to cities without a tax, and the average grocery bill did not increase in Berkeley after the tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d8H0sbnEmNQ\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch a video summarizing the study above, and read the full study in\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pmed.1002283\" target=\"_blank\">PLOSMed here<\/a>.
