
{"id":1980,"date":"2020-02-12T08:32:35","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T13:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalfoodresearchprogram.web.unc.edu\/?p=1980"},"modified":"2024-12-27T09:46:51","modified_gmt":"2024-12-27T14:46:51","slug":"ssb-purchases-drop-chile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/ssb-purchases-drop-chile\/","title":{"rendered":"Sugary Drink purchases plunge following Chile&#8217;s new Food Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A study by our GFRP <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/team\/lindsey-smith-taillie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">team<\/a><\/strong> &amp; our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/where-we-work\/chile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chilean collaborators<\/a>,<\/strong> published 11 Feb 2020 in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1003015#sec018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PLOS Medicine<\/a><\/strong>, finds that Chile\u2019s Law of Food Labeling and Advertising, implemented in 2016, was followed by a significant 23.7% decline in purchases of sugary drinks. This research, following changes in purchases of over 2000 households in Chile, is the first publication of our work to show the effects of the regulations in Chile to jointly mandate front-of-package warning labels, restrict child-directed marketing, and ban sales in schools of all foods and beverages containing added sugars, sodium, or saturated fats that exceed set nutrient or calorie thresholds. Various media outlets have focused on this study, including in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/feb\/11\/chiles-drastic-anti-obesity-measures-cut-sugary-drink-sales-by-23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Guardian<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/11\/health\/chile-soda-warning-label.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Times<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">Consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks dropped nearly 25 percent in the 18 months after Chile adopted a raft of regulations that included advertising restrictions on unhealthy foods, bold front-of-package warning labels and a ban on junk food in schools. During the same period, researchers recorded a five percent increase in purchases of bottled water, diet soft drinks and fruit juices without added sugar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-exrw3m evys1bk0\">\u201cAn effect this big at the national level in the first year is unheard-of,\u201d said\u00a0<strong><a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/sph.unc.edu\/adv_profile\/lindsey-smith-taillie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lindsey Smith Taillie<\/a>,<\/strong> a nutrition epidemiologist at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the study\u2019s lead author. \u201cIt is a very promising sign for a set of policies that mutually reinforce one another.
