They found that this combined policy scenario would likely lead low-income households to improve the nutritional quality of their grocery purchases without increasing their overall costs or negatively impacting consumer satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Targeted taxes are a proven, cost-effective means to reduce purchase and intake of sugary drinks, which could potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbhub.io\/dotorg\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/Health-Taxes-to-Save-Lives.pdf\">save millions of years of life globally<\/a> by reducing chronic diseases caused by excess sugar and calories. This new study\u2019s findings support a novel policy approach, combining both policy types to expand low-income households\u2019 access to additional healthier alternatives like minimally processed proteins such as beans, legumes, or unprocessed meats, and no- or low-sugar beverages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur findings show that we can support healthier dietary patterns in the US by directing revenues from national taxes on ultra-processed products high in sugar, sodium and\/or saturated fats towards additional benefits to help low-income households purchase more fruits, vegetables and other healthier alternatives,\u201d said senior author Shu Wen Ng, PhD, Distinguished Scholar in Public Health Nutrition at the UNC-Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure industry on the overarching goal of improving dietary patterns and nutritional security,\u201d added first author Pourya Valizadeh, PhD, who completed this research during a post-doctoral fellowship at UNC-Chapel Hill. \u201cThe taxes should not be primarily about generating revenue, but rather shifting the relative prices of unhealthy vs healthy foods so that lower-income families in the US can more reliably attain foods and beverages that support health.\u201d This study\u2019s findings could inform recent congressional bills including the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/crawford.house.gov\/posts\/reps-crawford-and-kildee-introduce-legislation-to-expand-low-income-americans-access-to-fresh-fruits-and-vegetables\">GusNIP Expansion Act<\/a>\u201d and the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.booker.senate.gov\/news\/press\/booker-blunt-rochester-introduce-bicameral-legislation-to-scale-up-successful-nutrition-incentive-for-fruits-and-veggies-nationwide\">Opt for Health with SNAP (OH SNAP) Close the Fruit and Vegetable Fap Act<\/a>\u201d that would levy taxes on unhealthy beverages and expand targeted subsidies beyond existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/snap\/supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program\">SNAP benefits<\/a> for minimally processed foods and beverages to low-income households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr
