Our current work focuses primarily on diet-related health disparities that can lead to higher risk of chronic diseases for some groups, including low-income, Black, and Latinx populations. We also study factors impacting child nutrition. More specifically, our U.S. research projects examine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/trends-in-dietary-intake-and-eating-behaviors\/\"><strong>Food purchasing and dietary intake: <\/strong>Trends and disparities<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/us-policy-evaluations\/\"><strong>U.S. policies and programs: <\/strong>Evaluations and designs<\/a><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/us-policy-evaluations\/\">Sugary drink taxes<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/us-policy-evaluations#US_Labelling_Regulations\">Labeling regulations<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/us-policy-evaluations\/#Federal_Assistance\">Federal food assistance programs<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/us-policy-evaluations\/#Healthy_Incentives\">Healthy incentive&nbsp;programs<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/us-policy-evaluations\/#Joint_Approaches\">Joint approaches for health and sustainability<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/changes-in-the-food-supply-impact-on-dietary-intake\/\"><strong>The food supply: <\/strong>Monitoring changes<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Shs7T4QXifw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" class=\"wp-image-3798\" style=\"width: 200px; margin-left: 20px;\" src=\"http:\/\/gfrtest.web.unc.edu\/files\/2019\/11\/UNC_miniMart-230x300.png\" alt=\"\"><\/a>We have developed innovative methods and models to evaluate and inform the design of federal food assistance programs (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/wic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WIC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/snap\/supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SNAP<\/a>) and nutrition policy interventions such as front-of-package labeling, food and drink taxes or subsidies, restrictions on junk food marketing, and other nutrition-related policies. These methods include <strong>pricing simulations<\/strong> that model the effect of different pricing policies such as taxes and subsidies on food purchases and nutritional outcomes and <strong>experimental grocery stores<\/strong> (both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/innovative-online-grocery-store-model-takes-nutrition-research-to-a-new-level-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">virtual<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unc.edu\/discover\/transforming-a-lab-into-a-mini-mart\/?utm_campaign=100119+Transforming+a+lab+into+a+mini-mart&amp;utm_medium=bitly&amp;utm_source=Twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">real-life<\/a>).
