Unhealthy dietary patterns are a major cause of mortality and disability-adjusted life-years there. Colombia also has strong consumer advocacy and legal groups very focused on constitutional rights of children and supporting healthy eating as a major pathway to enhance the health of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July 2021, the Colombian government passed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/periodico.unal.edu.co\/articulos\/ley-de-comida-chatarra-de-que-se-trata-y-cuales-son-sus-beneficios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ley Comida Chatarra<\/a>\u00a0(The Junk Food Law), which mandates front-of-package labeling. With our research partners in Colombia, we conducted experiments to inform the design of these labels. Our research found that octagonal-shaped labels (like those used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/where-we-work\/chile\/\">Chile<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/where-we-work\/peru\/\">Peru<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/where-we-work\/mexico\/\">Mexico<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/GFRP-UNC_FOPL_maps_2025_3.pdf\">soon<\/a> in Argentina and Venezuela) were the most effective, and that warning labels outperformed other label designs (Nutri-Score and Guideline Daily Amounts) among Colombians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On December 13, 2022, the Colombian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minsalud.gov.co\/Paginas\/MinSalud-expide-Resolucion-2492-2022-sobre-etiquetado-nutricional-y-frontal.aspx#:~:text=MinSalud%20expide%20Resoluci%C3%B3n%202492%2F2022%20sobre%20etiquetado%20nutricional%20y%20frontal,-Ministerio%20de%20Salud&amp;text=%E2%80%8BLa%20nueva%20resoluci%C3%B3n%20modifica,y%20empacados%20para%20consumo%20humano.&amp;text=Bogot%C3%A1%20D.C.%2C%2013%20de%20diciembre%202022.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ministry of Health issued Resolution 2492<\/a> detailing how the law will be regulated, including final label design (black octagonal warning labels) and the nutrient profiling model to identify which products will be subject to the regulation. Industry has six months to implement the labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in December, 2022, Colombia passed two fiscal policies: taxes on ultra-processed, sugary beverages and ultra-processed food products (<em>details below<\/em>). Colombia is the first country in the world to specifically target overconsumption of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/UPF_ultra-processed_food_fact_sheet.pdf\">ultra-processed products<\/a> with a fiscal policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our future evaluations:<\/strong>&nbsp;In collaboration with our research partners in Colombia, we plan to evaluate&nbsp;the adoption and impact of the world\u2019s first tax on both&nbsp;sugar-sweetened beverages and ultra-processed foods.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colombia faces high and rising prevalence of obesity and diabetes, with a large proportion of calories in the modern Colombian diet coming from ultra-processed foods.
