The project is expected to contribute to the EPA\u2019s goal of halving U.S. household food waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roughly one-third of all food produced is not consumed, leading to food waste. Food waste occurs throughout the supply chain, but about half takes place at the consumer level. This study will investigate reasons why consumers waste food and explore strategies to help households reduce and prevent food waste. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Taillie_Smith_Lindsey_headshot_wide.jpg\" alt=\"Lindsey Smith Taillie headshot\" class=\"wp-image-7860\" width=\"219\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Taillie_Smith_Lindsey_headshot_wide.jpg 875w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Taillie_Smith_Lindsey_headshot_wide-350x240.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Taillie_Smith_Lindsey_headshot_wide-768x527.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Taillie_Smith_Lindsey_headshot_wide-42x29.jpg 42w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Taillie_Smith_Lindsey_headshot_wide-88x60.jpg 88w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><figcaption>Lindsey Smith Taillie, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was shocked to learn how damaging food waste is to climate change and our environmental systems,\u201d said Dr. Taillie. \u201cThis new EPA grant seemed like the perfect opportunity to begin working on developing solutions to reduce food waste while also promoting healthier dietary behaviors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hpdp.unc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/976\/2021\/06\/Headshot_Alice-Ammerman_website_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"122\" height=\"182\"\/><figcaption>Alice Ammerman, DrPH<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Recognizing the financial impact of food waste, the researchers will also explore how reducing food waste can improve food security in low-income households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFood waste and food loss are major environmental, social, and economic challenges,\u201d said Dr. Ammerman. \u201cPreventing household food waste is critical to reducing food insecurity, maximizing the natural resources used in food production, preventing climate change, and ensuring a sustainable food supply.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study will explore consumer food waste across six stages: planning, shopping, storage, cooking, consumption, and disposal.
