The full study is available<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/doi\/10.1136\/bmj.h6704\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insp.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instituto Nacional de Salud P\u00fablica<\/a><\/strong> (INSP), the University of North Carolina\u2019s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sph.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gillings School of Global Public Health<\/a><\/strong> and UNC\u2019s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpc.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carolina Population Center<\/a><\/strong> estimated changes in household purchases of beverages over the complete year of 2014 compared with beverage purchase trends from 2012 and 2013. The study was funded mainly by long-term support to the INSP and the University of North Carolina by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg Philanthropies<\/a><\/strong> along with supplementary funding from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rwjf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Wood Johnson Foundation<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Key findings include:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There was a six percent average decline in purchases of taxed beverages during 2014, reaching a 12 percent reduction by December.<\/li>\n<li>The tax had the greatest impact among lower socioeconomic households, with a nine percent average decline in purchases of sugary drinks over 2014 and a 17 percent decline by December among that group.<\/li>\n<li>The purchase of untaxed beverages increased by four percent overall, primarily driven by an increase in bottled water purchases.
