Funded by state allocations from the federal CARES Act and operated by Durham-based nonprofit Reinvestment Partners, the Healthy Helping program ran from June\u2013December 2020 and was offered to adults enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) who were experiencing additional food insecurity during COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"486\" height=\"669\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Headshot_Molly-DeMarco_website_small-e1662554672778.jpeg\" alt=\"Molly De Marco headshot\" class=\"wp-image-10355\" style=\"width:150px;height:205px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Headshot_Molly-DeMarco_website_small-e1662554672778.jpeg 486w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Headshot_Molly-DeMarco_website_small-e1662554672778-254x350.jpeg 254w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Headshot_Molly-DeMarco_website_small-e1662554672778-42x58.jpeg 42w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Headshot_Molly-DeMarco_website_small-e1662554672778-44x60.jpeg 44w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Molly De Marco, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that targeted fruit and vegetable benefit programs work to increase access and improve dietary quality, but we wanted to learn more about the program experience from participants\u2019 points of view,\u201d said Molly De Marco, leader of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hpdp.unc.edu\/fforc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food, Fitness + Opportunity Research Collaborative<\/a> at the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and the study\u2019s lead author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De Marco and colleagues conducted phone interviews with 10 participants from rural and urban locations and ranging in age from 34 to 72 years. Key themes that emerged included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Participants were thankful for the benefit. They purchased more and a greater variety of fruits and vegetables that would normally be outside their budget.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using Healthy Helping benefits freed up money to use on other expenses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participants enjoyed being able to choose what foods to buy with the benefit. Several interviewees who were also enrolled in other food assistance programs (e.g., School Meals, USDA\u2019s Farmers to Families Food Boxes, or Meals on Wheels) noted that a lack of choice in how, when, and what foods they received deterred them from continuing to use other programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Ng_Shuwen_headshot.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7779\" style=\"width:150px;height:188px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Ng_Shuwen_headshot.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Ng_Shuwen_headshot-280x350.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Ng_Shuwen_headshot-42x53.jpg 42w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Ng_Shuwen_headshot-48x60.jpg 48w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shu Wen Ng, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The research team also surveyed a larger group of 200 participants to examine overall dietary quality and found that despite high levels of food insecurity, the foods and drinks consumed in Healthy Helping households were similar to those in the typical American diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBased on previous research, we might expect these lower-income households with food insecurity to be eating fewer fruits, vegetables, and whole grains than higher-income households. Our finding that their diet quality was similar suggests some improvement among Healthy Helping households after enrolling in the program,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/team\/shu-wen-ng\/\">Shu Wen Ng<\/a>, co-author and Associate Professor of Nutrition and Co-Director of the Global Food Research Program. \u201cWe can\u2019t be sure, though, since we had no dietary measures from before respondents enrolled in the program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Headshot_Isabel-Lu_website_small-201x300-1-e1662555010840.png\" alt=\"Isabel Lu headshot\" class=\"wp-image-10361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Headshot_Isabel-Lu_website_small-201x300-1-e1662555010840.png 150w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Headshot_Isabel-Lu_website_small-201x300-1-e1662555010840-42x48.png 42w, https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Headshot_Isabel-Lu_website_small-201x300-1-e1662555010840-52x60.png 52w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Isabel Lu, MPH, RD<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This study supports previous research showing that targeted fruit and vegetable benefit programs are effective and well-liked. \u201cHealthy Helping is a model that offers flexibility for families to make their own decisions about what and how much healthy food to purchase,\u201d said first author Isabel Lu, Healthy Helping project coordinator. \u201cWith rising food costs due to inflation and ongoing supply-chain issues, low-income households continue to need greater financial access to healthier diets. Incentive programs like Healthy Helping can help fill this gap.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Options for expanding programs like Healthy Helping could occur through SNAP, as an additional benefit, or through healthcare settings.
